Ready to Go: Round the Cape

We anchored later than expected this afternoon. We left Shearwater early for smoother sailing and made it to our intended anchorage around 11am. I did some quick back of the envelope calculations and decided if we kept going and skipped our first anchorage, we had enough time to make it to the following anchorage with plenty of time for dinner. That would give us an extra day of options for rounding Cape Caution. It turned out to be a good decision, because the weather is better for the rounding tomorrow than it will be again for several days. The wind tomorrow with be from the south, which is good and bad. Good, because Vancouver Island will offer some protection against building seas, especially once we turn the corner into Queen Charlotte Strait. What's not so good, is that the wind and waves will be in our faces, which can create uncomfortable conditions if the wind gets strong. The day will start at 5-15 knots early and build to 15-20 later in the day. The seas are forecast to be less that 1 meter, which is good to hear.

So we'll poke our noses out in it early, 5am, and and see how it goes. If conditions get too uncomfortable we can always turn around and go with the wind and seas. We call that a retreat. I'm not expecting to have to turn around though.

It will be interesting to see what we get. I've rounded Caution or Cape Scott (on the north end of Vancouver Island) several times and have enjoyed mild conditions each time. I'm looking forward to seeing what we get with a forecast that is a little more sporty.
