Going to Town

We're going into Shearwater today. Three cheers for showers, laundry, WiFi.

Remember when we used to have to send post cards from every little town?

I'm finishing up the last of the oatmeal while listening to the sound of another woodpecker rattle. It's a good thing we're going to town. Our provisions run low.

We're under way now. Gliding over glassy water toward Seaforth Channel. The ocean swell is building as we proceed south. The channel leads out into the open ocean if we were to turn right. Today we go left, back inland toward the comfort of Shearwater, where we'll be reunited with Opus. We look forward to hearing about the adventures of Opus since we saw them last in Prince Rupert.

It's nice to have a calm day to poke our noses out into the ocean swell. The chart has warnings about this neighborhood. Apparently the Perceval Narrows where we are making our exit can run up to 5 knots. When the tide is ebbing and runs into a large ocean swell it can create large steep sea conditions that are "hazardous to small craft." To say nothing of their crew.

Wow! We just went toe to toe with a whale. We were headed for a head on collision and were about 50 feet away, when we blinked first and veered off. The whale blithely continue on its way disappearing into our prop wash.

We've turned the corner on Seaforth Channel and the ocean swell is receding.

I'll post some photos when I have coverage in the marina.

Until then… etc. etc.
