Helmken Island

We're anchored in a cove on a small island in the middle of Johnstone Strait tonight. We made our way up the Strait in heady current. Our boat speed through the water: 5kts, same as always. Boat speed over the ground: 12kts. That means the water was traveling at 7 kts. It's a good thing the current wasn't against us.

The cove is intimate, large enough for one or two boats. The one detractor to an otherwise lovely little cove is a large private property sign on shore. This is the North Cove on Helmken island. I've anchored in the cove next to this one a few years ago. Baby Bear Cove. It's smaller and less straight forward to enter.

It was leftovers last night, reheated Mac and cheese. We'll have tacos tonight in Thurston harbor, our launching point for the following day's run through Seymour Narrows.
