Well the sun is out. It's not very warm and the wind is gusting to 40 knots or so, but… at least the sun is out. We're hunkered down for the day. We had a productive chat with Opus this morning. The take aways from that brief conference were that 1) they are going to defer a decision on continuing or not depending on how difficult it turns out to be to raise and lower their anchor, 2) they'll be joined by another crew member today, bringing their total to three, 3) they need the fuel we brought for them, and 4) it doesn't make much sense to work our way over to their anchorage in these conditions, because we wouldn't want to dinghy over, in this wind anyway. All we'd be able to do is wave at them from afar.
The plan is to meet them at the next anchorage, and transfer the fuel to them in calmer weather. We'll depart tomorrow morning around 6:30 am for a 1:30 pm arrival at slack in Gabriola Passage where the current can run at over 7 knots if we time it wrong.
In the mean time we hang out and wait while getting pushed around the cove. We gave ourselves just enough swinging room to avoid being pushed into the rocks along the shore. Hopefully that anchor holds. We're keeping an eye on it.
These winds are incredible. Read the Cliff Mass blog for his take on this unusual weather event. I do not envy you swinging at the end of the anchor chain.
